About QW Research

Fundamental analysis of ~3,000 US companies, built from their own SEC filings.

What this is

Most stock pages are a database schema with a chart on top: every ratio anyone has ever computed, in no particular order, leaving you to work out which ones matter. QW Research is built the other way round — around the questions an analyst actually asks before putting money into a business, with the evidence for each answer and the gaps named rather than hidden.

It is free, needs no account, and the figures come from primary filings rather than a vendor's summary of them.

The four questions

Every stock page answers these, in order, and shows its working.

1. Is the business good?

Return on invested capital against its own cost of capital — a company earning less than it pays for money is consuming it, however fast revenue grows.

2. Are the earnings real?

How much reported profit turns into cash, and what accruals, receivables and share-based compensation do to the gap.

3. Can it survive?

Leverage, interest coverage and liquidity — tested against a downturn, not against last year's good quarter.

4. What is priced in?

The growth today's share price already assumes, worked backwards from cash flow — and how often companies have actually delivered it.

Where the numbers come from

SEC EDGAR, the primary source — the filings themselves, not a reseller.

Company filings

XBRL financial data from every 10-K and 10-Q — the income statement, balance sheet and cash flow behind questions 1 to 4.

Insider trades

Form 4, classified by what each trade meant rather than its SEC code — most reported “selling” is scheduled plans and payroll.

Institutional ownership

13F holdings for 8,000+ filers, to show who owns a company and what they did last quarter.

How we handle what we don't know

  • A missing number is said, not guessed. Where the filings do not support an answer the page says so and why. A pre-revenue biotech gets “can't say” on question 1, which is more useful than a confident figure built on nothing.
  • Every figure carries its cohort. A metric reported by 300 companies is not “the market”, so the count sits next to the number.
  • No composite score. A business can be excellent and priced for perfection at the same time; one number destroys exactly that information. Four answers stay four answers.
  • Each answer carries the case against it. Every verdict shows the strongest fact arguing the other way, and the thresholds behind it are published rather than asserted.

What else is here

  • Markets — the whole market on one screen: margins, returns, leverage and valuation across ~3,000 companies and 58 quarters.
  • Screener — narrow that down on the fundamentals you care about.
  • Insiders — what officers and directors did with their own money.
  • Institutions — what the largest funds own and how that is shifting.
  • Insights — research we have run on our own data, including the results that did not support the idea.
  • Status — how current each dataset is, so you can judge the figures' age for yourself.
